Gaia is Black

In an effort to brighten up this dreary (for some of you, snow-filled) Monday, I’m going back to talking about characters some people didn’t know were Black. Today, I’m talking about Gaia from Captain Planet! Gaia is the spirit of Earth and guardian of harmony and peace on the planet, which makes sense because Black women make the world go round. Her skin tone changed throughout the series, which was possibly meant to make her representative of all women, though it was likely due to different animators drawing the character. Gaia was voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, which I didn’t remember, for the first three seasons of the show.
